PMD: The Battle of Lepanto

Description

On October 7, 1571, a coalition of Southern European maritime states headed by the Spanish Habsburg Dynasty dubbed the 'Holy League' engaged the fleet of the Turkish Ottoman Empire in an attempt to smash the Ottoman control over the Mediterranean Sea, partly in response to the loss of several major Christian holdings in the eastern part of said sea which proved a heavy blow to European powers.

The Holy League consisted of a huge naval coalition from the various Italian Republics such as Genoa and Venice, Spain, several minor duchies, the Papal States themselves, and even the Knights Hospitaller, whom since the Crusader states had been lost several hundred years before, had gradually transformed into sailing knights directed at stomping down piracy against Christian ships. They possessed 212 ships, 6 of which were the massive Venetian Galleasses which sailed ahead of the main fleet, and had in force around 70,000 men and around 1,800 guns-- that is, cannons. The number of arquebusiers and musketeers' smaller firearms numbered much higher.

The Ottoman fleet consisted of 251 ships, answering the Holy League's Galleasses with 45 of their small, maneuverable Galliots infamous for their use as pirate ships. They had in force around 82,500 some men, though a good number of them were slaves rowing the ships. They also had around 741 artillery pieces, but were woefully understocked. While they did likely have firearms at the battle, they relied on their longer-ranged, reputedly feared archers which allowed them to weaken enemy crews before they could come into range for retaliation from (small) gunpowder weapons.

The Battle ended with the Christians utterly decimating the Ottoman fleet and remains as one of the debatably most important battles of the Early Modern period, denying the Ottomans' ability to threaten Southern Europe as a superpower ever again. While the Ottomans were able to actually rebuild their fleet, and indeed afterwards go on to conquer much of North Africa and even more territory from Venice, they were never able in the same age to replenish the experienced, elite troops they had lost during the battle. While they regained some of their supremacy, the image of invincibility and fear that they had was gone forever.

Here is shown a Holy League crew of Knights Hospitaller and Spanish sailors boarding an Ottoman galleon staffed with Janissaries. Except Pokemon. And the Spanish and Knights I don't believe shared their ships.

Merry Christmas, my darling Kira, this is the present I have been working on for you  :iconzangoose-kira:

We both love medieval things, and we both love Pokemon, but neither of us have really done too much with those two things together. So, I put them together :D! The two main Pokesonas of me, the Buizel and the Pachirisu, are dressed in the colors of the Knights Hospitaller of the 16th century. The Pokesonas of my wonderful, brilliant lover, the Azumarill and the Slowking, are dressed in the mustard yellow and light blues of the Habsburg soldiers.

...I was hoping that I was going to be able to draw more focus on the Slowking in the background, but I wasn't able to pull it off in a realistic-looking way <;~;>.

Well, my love, I hope you like it. In the future, I may remake this one to do these characters proper justice and pay more attention to the detail on their equipment.

At any rate,

Merry Christmas :iconzangoose-kira:, I love you and I hope you enjoy this!

Yes it's technically the Early Modern period, but most people think that that's the Late Medieval times so bleh!
